At O’Neil Companies, we spend a lot of time thinking about communication.

It’s what we’ve done for more than a century. We help organizations share messages, tell stories, build relationships, and create experiences that matter. It’s why we often say our purpose is delivering Messaging that Matters.

But the longer I’ve been in business, the more I’ve come to believe that the most important messages aren’t the ones we print, package, mail, design, or distribute. They’re the messages we send through our actions.

How we treat people. How we lead. How we respond when challenges arise. How we support our communities. How we care for the environment. How we choose to grow. Those messages reveal who we truly are.

That belief is one of the reasons ON Purpose resonates so deeply with me and with the entire O’Neil family of companies.

The Gap Between Values and Action

Most organizations have values. They appear on websites, conference room walls, recruiting materials, and employee handbooks. They sound inspiring and aspirational. Yet too often, they remain disconnected from the decisions people make every day.

The challenge isn’t creating values. The challenge is living them.

Purpose has become one of the most talked-about concepts in business, but too often it stays at the level of intention. Organizations talk about purpose, but struggle to operationalize it. They want to create impact but lack a framework for bringing purpose into leadership, culture, hiring, growth, customer experience, and decision-making.

That’s why ON Purpose exists.

At its core, ON Purpose is about closing the gap between what we believe and what we do. It provides practical tools, shared accountability, and a community of leaders committed to creating organizations that align values with action. It’s not about perfection. It’s about intentionality.

Why Purpose Matters More Than Ever

The world has changed. Employees want more than a paycheck. Customers want more than a transaction. Communities want more than promises.

People want authenticity. They want transparency. They want to know the organizations they support stand for something meaningful and are willing to back it up with action.

The data supports this shift. Research from Deloitte has consistently shown that purpose-driven organizations outperform their peers in employee engagement, innovation, and long-term growth. Gallup continues to find that employees who feel connected to a larger purpose are significantly more engaged and committed to their organizations.

We see this every day. The strongest organizations aren’t simply focused on growth. They’re focused on growing in a way that creates value for employees, customers, communities, and future generations.

Purpose isn’t separate from performance. Increasingly, it’s one of the drivers of it.

Employee Ownership and Purpose Go Hand in Hand

As an employee-owned company, this idea is especially meaningful to us. Employee ownership is much more than a financial structure. It’s a mindset.

When you’re an owner, you think differently. You recognize that your actions impact not only your own success but also the success of your teammates, customers, and organization. Ownership encourages accountability, stewardship, and long-term thinking.

At O’Neil, every employee-owner has a stake in our future. That shared responsibility creates a culture where people care deeply about the quality of their work, the relationships they build, and the impact they create.

In many ways, ON Purpose and employee ownership are natural partners. Both encourage people to think beyond themselves. Both focus on creating something that lasts. Both remind us that what we do matters.

Beyond Business: Community and Environmental Impact

Purpose doesn’t stop when the workday ends. For us, it extends into the communities we serve and the world we leave behind.

Whether it’s supporting nonprofits, investing in local initiatives, volunteering our time, participating in community events, or helping mission-driven organizations amplify their message, we believe business should create value beyond the balance sheet. The same is true for environmental stewardship.

Through programs like PrintReleaf and our ongoing sustainability efforts, we’re working to reduce environmental impact while helping our customers do the same. Responsible sourcing, thoughtful production practices, waste reduction, and reforestation initiatives are all part of our broader commitment to creating a positive legacy. These efforts aren’t side projects. They’re expressions of our values.

One Purpose Across Many Brands

Today, O’Neil Companies includes O’Neil Printing, Rule29, Printing Solutions, YB², and a growing ecosystem of partners and collaborators. Each company serves clients differently, but all are connected by a common belief.

Building the Future ON Purpose

As we continue to grow, ON Purpose provides a powerful reminder that business success and human impact are not competing priorities. The strongest organizations understand how to pursue both.

They recognize that trust is earned. That culture matters. That community matters. That sustainability matters. And that the future belongs to organizations willing to align what they say with what they do. At O’Neil Companies, we’re committed to that journey.

We know we won’t always get it perfect. But we believe showing up with purpose, leading with kindness, taking ownership, and striving to make a positive impact is work worth doing.
