The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) at Arizona State University (ASU) recently partnered with Honeywell to design an immersive environment that celebrates innovation, advanced engineering, and sustainability. ASU’s Marcomm and creative team, responsible for recruitment and student engagement across the engineering school’s eight divisions, collaborated with O’Neil to bring this ambitious installation to life. With a challenging project scope, complex spatial elements, and a high-profile deadline, O’Neil’s expertise in design planning and project coordination was essential to achieving a compelling final product that successfully conveyed ASU and Honeywell’s shared mission.

Client Overview: ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, the largest engineering school in the U.S., supports a wide range of academic and administrative departments, including Academic Student Affairs, Global Engagement, and Events. ASU’s Marcomm and creative team is dedicated to creating messaging that highlights ASU’s commitment to innovation. With a mission to inspire future engineers, the team sought to develop a visually impactful installation that would resonate with students, faculty, and industry partners.

The Challenge: This collaboration between ASU and Honeywell presented several logistical and creative challenges:

  • Complex Coordination: To align branding and goals, ASU’s team coordinated with Honeywell’s branding team, ASU’s architecture office, ASU’s brand office, and the ASU Foundation.
  • Space Complexity: The installation space included an array of walls, windows, and irregularly shaped surfaces with diverse materials, which required precision in design and execution.
  • Critical Timeline: With an inflexible deadline tied to a major ASU event, it was essential that all elements of the installation were completed on time and to the highest quality standards.

The Solution: O’Neil partnered with ASU’s Marcomm team to manage the planning, design, and installation, ensuring that each aspect of the project aligned with the complex requirements and timeline. Key aspects of O’Neil’s solution included:

    • Consultative Design and Material Selection: From the beginning, Tony Mancuso and his team at O’Neil engaged with ASU’s creative team to offer material options that suited the unique surfaces and requirements of the space.     • Detailed Measurements and Production Planning: Given the variety of surface shapes and materials, O’Neil assisted in taking precise measurements and provided input on graphic design planning. This support enabled ASU to produce graphic files tailored to the specifications of the space, helping streamline production and installation.
    • Seamless Coordination and Timeline Management: Dan Traynor, Manager of Creative Services at ASU, sums it up best: “Given the massive scale and scope of work for this project, it was key for our success to partner with a vendor who functioned seamlessly with our team and understood our specific concerns.” Tony and the O’Neil team provided hands-on coordination with ASU’s building services and managed every detail of the installation schedule. Dan continued, “We had a huge event planned that we absolutely had to have everything completed for, and Tony was an excellent partner in helping us plan and coordinate all elements to ensure completion—not only on time but with a high level of quality.”
